Can i sign in with a modded xbox 360?

Can i sign in with a modded xbox 360 (as in to the dashbroad), I'm thinking of getting my 360 modded. But i just want to know if u can sign in (just to chat, send message and play single player)... Or will i be banned as soon as i sign in??? Plus does MS ban your I.P addy or 360???
