What are the effects of lack of insulin?

The fundamental effect is that inability of most cells to take up glucose. This is a problem in type I diabetes because the endocrine pancreas does not produce insulin due to an autoimmune reaction that kills the insulin-producing cells. That is, there is plenty of energy around but it cannot be used by the cells.
